Update from Geneva: Calls intensify for dismantling deterrence policies to pave the way for genuine security and cooperation

Ray Acheson, Director of Reaching Critical Will of WILPF, delivered a statement at the Second Session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 NPT Review Conference, endorsed by 16 civil society organizations. Acheson emphasized the importance of integrating gender perspectives into nuclear disarmament discussions. They underscored the need for diverse representation in policymaking, especially from Indigenous communities affected by nuclear activities. Acheson called for dismantling gender norms that glorify nuclear strength as masculine and discredit humanitarian concerns as feminine. They urged NPT states to recognize and address these issues to achieve meaningful disarmament, advocating for intersectional participation and the inclusion of impacted communities in discussions and policy outcomes.
