Previously known as our Active Members Meetings, every month IPPNWC hosts a speaker to share their unique expertise experiences and in our speaker series. The purpose of our calls is to learn, inspire and support each other projects. Anyone is welcome attend the speaker series as an Active Member or observer.

Now, as an Active member or Speaker Series Observer, you don’t pay a fee and you don’t have responsibilities except to offer your interest, experience and enthusiasm on our monthly phone calls whenever you can participate. The Speaker Series are on Zoom on the second Wednesday of each month at 5 PM PST.

November Speaker Series: "Radiation Risks: Addressing the Health and Environmental Impacts of Nuclear Waste Storage in Canada” " featuring Dr. Edith Gardell and Justin Roy

Dr. Edith Gardell:
Dr. Edith Dietlind Gardell is a distinguished medical doctor, researcher, and public health professional with an extensive career spanning Europe, the USA, and Canada. She has expertise in internal and transplant medicine, hematology, and public health, with clinical experience in tropical medicine and research roles in leading institutions. Dr. Gardell served as Director of the Histocompatibility Laboratory at Eberhard-Karl University, contributing to protocols for kidney and bone marrow transplants. Her research work includes significant contributions at the Ottawa General Hospital, in partnership with the University of Ottawa and the Canadian Red Cross. Her public service roles include her work as clinical reviewer of experimental drugs at Health Canada, as  Associate Director of the Radiation Protection Bureau and Associate Executive Director of the Emergency Preparedness and Response Directorate in Public Health. Her professional affiliations include the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment. Dr. Gardell’s commitment to health and environmental justice is underscored by her engagement with Indigenous health through the Canadian Environmental Law Association and certification in Indigenous Canada from the University of Alberta, and advanced certification in alternative dispute resolution from the University of Windsor.

Justin Roy:
Justin Roy is a proud member of the Algonquin Nation and community of Kebaowek First Nation. He is a member of Kebaowek’s Chief and Council, 3rd consecutive term, and also holds the role of Director of Community Development for the Kebaowek First Nation. In his leadership roles, Justin works to promote the well-being, self-determination, and economic growth of his Nation. As a Councillor, he advocates for Indigenous rights, cultural preservation, protection of all lands, waters, and life that make up the nations unceded Algonquin territory and governance that reflects the needs and aspirations of his people. In his role as Director of Community Development, he leads initiatives aimed at improving community infrastructure, implementation of community owed business’s and projects, supporting entrepreneurs of the community, manage and support culture and language team in efforts towards culture and language revitalization, ensuring sustainable growth and opportunities for future generations. Justin's leadership is deeply rooted in his commitment to traditional values, community unity, and creating long-lasting positive change for Kebaowek First Nation.
