Investment in the education and empowerment of new leaders is key to creating a sustainable, peaceful and just world. With that, IPPNWC is excited to announce the first ever IPPNWC Medical and Health Student Cohort. These young leaders will join board members and experts in 6-part seminar series in April through June and be invited to collaborate on and lead various IPPNWC programs, conferences and consultations. By launching this program, IPPNWC is creating an online space to make cross regional, intergenerational connections in the medical and health community with an underlying foundation of peace and justice. Oluwakonyinsolami Ogunrinde
Meet Oluwakonyinsolami (Feyi) Ogunrinde. She is a nursing student in her final semester at Toronto Metropolitan University. She is interested in women’s health and public health and is excited to learn more about how health care professionals can help in teaching patients about the impact of climate change on our health. She looks forward to working and learning from IPPNWC.
Walusungu Mtonga
Walusungu Mtonga comes from Lusaka, Zambia and graduated from Matero Boys Secondary School in Lusaka in 2014. He holds a premedical degree in Human Biology and is currently in his final year of clinical clerkship at the University of Zambia pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery degree. He works as a part time medical intern at Prudential Life Assurance Zambia and is the Chairperson of the Zambia Health Workers for Social Responsibility for IPPNW Student chapter. He is also an affiliate of the Federation of medical students’ associations in Africa (FAMSA) who seek to be actively involved in tackling the peculiar problems of the African continent, especially as it regards health. Walusungu is passionate about public health and finding solutions to public health threats especially in economically deprived countries. In his free time Walusungu spends time with his family and friends, participates in various sporting activities and reads a lot of books.
Emma Amaral
Emma Amaral is a medical student passionate about human rights and evolving challenges to global peace and stability. Before pursuing an MD she worked as a policy analyst with the Centre for International Digital Policy at Global Affairs Canada, where she worked at the intersection of international relations and digital technologies. Emma led Canada’s engagement at the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC), a multistakeholder organization including over thirty states dedicated to human rights online, and spearheaded Canada’s successful Chairship bid of the FOC. Prior to joining the Government of Canada, she conducted research and advocacy on human rights and public health in a variety of contexts, including the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and non-profit organizations. She holds a Master of Global Affairs (MGA) degree from the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy and a Bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Toronto.
Jezreel Sol-Edeigba
Meet Jezreel Sol-Edeigba. He is an undergraduate student at the University of Toronto pursuing a Bachelors of honours science degree in the Biology for Health Sciences program. His desire to pursue a career in the field of health sciences and global health stems from familial connections that suffered from health-related issues. Witnessing the impact that these issues had on his loved ones, combined with his passion for supporting the health and well-being of children, ultimately led him to aspire in becoming a global emergency-care pediatrician to support health care systems globally and domestically. He looks forward to creating great relationships, learning more about global health and interacting with like minded people in the IPPNWC Medical and Health Studies Student Program!
Adna Arnout
Adna Arnaout graduated in 2019 with a BA in Liberal Arts from St. John's College, USA. She is currently a fourth year medical student based in Sarajevo, with an interest in the intersection between the humanities and medical science, in particular the concept of "narrative medicine" and its applications to the issue of trauma. Studying under a Sufi shaykha as an apprentice, she also occasionally writes poetry and is a caregiver to her beloved grandmother suffering from a devastating illness that is dementia
Karen Li
Karen is a first-year medical student at the University of Toronto. Prior to medicine, she studied Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences at McMaster University, where she also gained exposure to various disciplines within the Health Humanities. She have a strong interest in Global and Population health. Karen hopes to utilize my role in medicine to learn about and advocate for international causes.
Eugene Apienti
Meet Eugene Apienti. He is a current Master of Public Health (MPH) student focusing on health promotion and disease prevention. His passion for public health has led him to pursue an advanced degree in the field, as he is committed to positively impacting the health and well-being of individuals and communities. Eugene is particularly interested in health promotion and disease prevention, as these areas offer significant opportunities for improving public health outcomes and reducing health disparities. He is excited to be a part of IPPNW and looks forward to sharing his insights and contributing to discussions with this esteemed board of members. .
Jessica Gouveia
Meet Jessica Gouveia. She is a 28-year-old full-time undergraduate student in her 3rd year of Honours BA in Counselling Psychology. She currently works as an Associate Addictions Counsellor as well as a reservation's agent for a few resorts in Ontario. She has 2 dogs and a cat that are the absolute best of friends. Jessica is looking to pursue her Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology following her current program as she is an active mental health advocate. She also volunteers with the local Victim Services Organization and Muskoka Parry Sound Sexual Assault Services as crisis support. When she is not busy between school and work, she is usually partaking in some sort of outdoor self-care activity which is something she encourages all of her clients to do as she believes that self-care contributes to overall mental health care.
Juliane Feliciano
Juliane is in her fourth year at the University of Ottawa, in an Honours Bachelors of Health Sciences with a Minor in Conflict Studies and Human Rights. She is deeply passionate about global health, particularly with a focus on human rights and health. Juliane has a research background observing the prevalence of Anti-Black biases across different ethnicities, and their impacts on the mental health of Black Americans. In her spare time, she loves spending time with her friends and eating a good scoop of ice cream!
Janey Lao
Meet Janey Lao! She is currently finishing up her third year at Western University in Health Sciences with an Honours Specialization in Health Promotion. She is extremely interested and passionate in the areas of health promotion, public health, bioethics, and health geography and hopes to pursue something within those mentioned fields. Outside of school, she is actively involved with a variety of sports and clubs at Western University. Janey is extremely excited for this opportunity and cannot wait to take part!
