News from Geneva: ICAN Statement on Nuclear Sharing to the 2024 Non-Proliferation Treaty Preparatory Committee
The Preparatory Committee for the 2026 NPT Review Conference is holding its second session from July 22 to August 2, 2024, in Geneva. On the second day, Naomi Zoka from Pax Christi Flanders delivered ICAN's statement, highlighting the increasing nuclear risks and the destabilizing impact of nuclear-armed states' policies. Zoka emphasized the catastrophic potential of nuclear weapon use, citing the long-lasting harm caused by over 2000 nuclear tests and the current nuclear arms race. She criticized the excessive spending by nuclear-armed states and the involvement of private industries. The statement also condemned nuclear sharing practices and emphasized the tremendous value of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) as the path to disarmament and justice globally.
