IPPNWC is Looking for an Executive Director

It is a challenging and exciting time to be working in the realm of nuclear disarmament. With the recent creation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and the rapid growth in the number of nations signing on to its principles, and the current alarming threatened nuclear weapons use in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there is a new awareness and urgency across the globe that makes the abolition of these weapons more pressing, and more possible. IPPNWC, as part of an international body (IPPNW) that has been working toward nuclear abolition since the 1980’s, seeks an executive director to help further this goal.

Our organization sees the nuclear threat as an issue of public and planetary health and brings that perspective to its understanding of the interrelationship of war and violence, environmental degradation, and the need for international non-violent cooperation and true peace for all.

Within that context we seek an exceptional person with excellent skills in communication, management and leadership who can help us continue to move forward on our critical mission.

Role

Reporting directly to the board of directors of IPPNWC, the executive director’s responsibilities will include:

  • Oversight of day-to-day operations

  • Supporting the board of directors to manage change and growth.

  • Management of staff and volunteer engagement.

  • Help with the development and implementation of programs, with a particular emphasis on ensuring quality and assessing effectiveness.

  • A key role in fundraising, grant application and related research, and promoting growth in membership.

  • Forge and maintain strong relationships among peers, key stakeholders, the media, civil society organizations and other relevant players.

  • Involvement with financial management to ensure budgets are observed, that resources are handled with care and that, in particular, the requirements of the relationship with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) are met.

  • Coordinate use of, and response to, various media platforms for education, advocacy, fundraising, and growth of membership.

  • Awareness, familiarity, and some expertise in the use of technology to assist the various aspects of our mission. In particular, capacity to manage social media and websites.

  • Ensure the development and implementation of policies consistent with best practice in this environment and to the highest ethical standards.

Qualities

The individual we are looking for is honest, thorough, and optimistic while being able to carefully analyze and work in an environment where goals, are seen by some, as aspirational. The successful candidate will possess strong communication skills with proven initiative and the ability to work in a fluid and changing environment. Experience with moving an organization along a change continuum will be useful. Evidence of success in previous fund-raising efforts, grant writing and increasing membership are an important consideration. Familiarity with computer office technology is essential with experience/interest in social media and the management of websites. The individual will work well with teams while able to manage an organizational head office that will be essentially virtual. Some background experience in the health care field will be as asset in understanding the culture and perspective of the organization. Significant knowledge in the spheres of peace, disarmament, climate crisis and their link to nuclear weapons and nuclear power are crucial to understanding the mission of IPPNWC. Ability to speak and write in French will be useful.
