Dr. Barbara Birkett addresses Oakville Council Meeting

Dr. Barbara Birkett address her local community council on November 18, 2019, about the urgent need for Canadian municipalities to put pressure on the federal goverment to sign the Treaty on the proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

The international Committee of the Red Cross has stated that there is no possible humanitarian response to a nuclear conflict and scientific studies have shown that even a limited nuclear war, say one between India and Pakistan would kill two billion people.

We have hope, however, about the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, adopted by 122 countries at the UN in July 2017, now signed by 80 countries, and ratified by 33. When 50 countries have ratified it, it will become international law.
